Theraphy Approach

Relationship and attachment difficulties

Healing the space between — professional support for couples and individuals navigating the complexities of connection.

"Relationships are the mirrors in which we see ourselves most clearly. Therapy provides the safe ground to explore that reflection, heal old wounds, and build something more honest and nourishing together."

— Carolyn Stevenson

Understanding Relationship Difficulties

Modern relationships are complex, layered, and deeply influenced by our earliest experiences of connection. The space between two people — what is spoken, what is left unsaid, what is felt but never named — can become a place of profound disconnection or extraordinary intimacy. Relationship difficulties are not a sign of failure. They are an invitation to look more honestly at the patterns, needs, and histories each person brings to the partnership. Whether you’re navigating conflict, rebuilding trust, or simply feeling distant from someone you love, therapy can help. I work with couples, partners, and individuals exploring relational patterns — offering a warm, non-judgmental space to untangle what has become stuck and rediscover genuine connection.

Common Relationship Challenges

Seeking help is an act of love

Choosing to work on your relationship — whether together or individually — is one of the most courageous and caring things you can do for yourself and those you love.

Areas of Relationship Therapy

Relationships come in many forms. I offer a safe, inclusive, and non-judgmental space for all kinds of relational experiences.

Couples Counselling

For partners at any stage — from early difficulties to long-established patterns — seeking to deepen understanding, improve communication, and reconnect.

Pre-marital Therapy

Building a strong foundation before marriage or long-term commitment — exploring values, expectations, communication styles, and potential areas of friction.

Navigating Divorce & Separation

Support for individuals or couples moving through the painful process of separation — with dignity, clarity, and care for all involved, including children.

Infidelity Recovery

Helping couples and individuals process the impact of affairs and betrayal — whether working towards reconciliation or navigating the path forward separately.

Family Dynamics

Exploring the relational patterns within families — between parents, siblings, and across generations — and how they shape who we are in all our relationships.

Polyamorous & ENM Support

Affirming, knowledgeable support for those in ethically non-monogamous or polyamorous relationships — navigating jealousy, boundaries, and communication.

My Approach to Relationship Therapy

I draw on an integrative, evidence-informed framework — weaving together the most effective relational therapeutic approaches, always tailored to the unique dynamic of each couple or individual I work with.

Integrative Relational Therapy

Drawing on multiple modalities to address the emotional, cognitive, and relational dimensions of your experience — nothing is one-size-fits-all.

Gottman-Informed Methods

Using research-backed tools from the Gottman Institute to identify and transform the patterns that predict disconnection — the Four Horsemen and beyond.

Systemic & Family Systems Thinking

Understanding each relationship within its wider context — family of origin, cultural background, and the systems that shape how we love and connect.

Attachment-Based Exploration

Gently exploring early attachment patterns and how they show up in adult relationships — bringing compassion and curiosity to the ways we seek and give love.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about relationship therapy are completely natural. Here are some of the most common ones I hear from couples and individuals.

"Reaching out for relationship support takes real courage. Once you do, I'll make sure both of you feel heard, respected, and genuinely supported every step of the way."

— Carolyn Stevenson

Not necessarily. While couples therapy involves both partners, I also work with individuals who want to explore their relational patterns alone. Sometimes one person attending can still create meaningful change in a relationship dynamic.
This is very common. You’re welcome to start individually, and many partners become more open once they see the positive changes therapy can bring. I can also offer guidance on how to approach the conversation with a reluctant partner.
Absolutely not. My role is to hold a neutral, compassionate space for both of you. I won’t judge, take sides, or tell you what decisions to make. The goal is to help you both feel heard and find your own way forward together.
Yes. Therapy can help whether you’re trying to save the relationship or navigate a separation with care and dignity. Sometimes the most loving thing is a conscious uncoupling — I can support both paths.
Yes — online relationship therapy works very well and allows couples to attend from the comfort of their own home, which many find easier. Sessions are conducted via a secure, encrypted video platform.
